The Meaning of Memorial Day & Pentecost

Memorial Day Explained

“Thank you for your service!” I hear this often on Memorial Day, and I am grateful for the recognition of my service to our country. However, there is some confusion about it with our holidays. 

Memorial Day is a time to honor those who gave their lives in service to others, reflecting the biblical call to sacrificial love. We remember with gratitude, pray with humility, and acknowledge that freedom is costly, pointing us ultimately to Christ, who laid down His life for all.

It started as Decoration Day, as the graves of fallen Union soldiers were decorated with flowers. It ultimately became an official holiday in 1971. 

Armed Forces Day (May 16th) celebrates all active-duty service members for their service and sacrifices for our nation.

Veteran’s Day (November 11th) celebrates the service of all our veterans. 

Celebrating Memorial Day is more than just a day off and hot dogs. It’s a day to thank God for the men and women who paid the ultimate price for our freedom.

What is Pentecost?

Pentecost was one of the special celebrations God gave to the people of Israel. It took place 50 days after Passover and originally remembered the moment God gave His people the Law at Mount Sinai. But Pentecost also became something even greater in the New Testament. It was the day God poured out the Holy Spirit on believers, and the Church was born.

Before Jesus ascended into heaven, He told His disciples to wait in Jerusalem for the promise of the Father:

“For John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
~ Acts 1:4-5

Pentecost reminds us that God has not left us to follow Him in our own strength. Through faith in Christ, the Holy Spirit lives within every believer by guiding and helping us live in a way that honors Jesus.

“But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.”
~ Galatians 5:16

The Christian life was never meant to be lived alone. Pentecost is celebrated on May 24th, and is a reminder that God empowers His people through His Spirit so we can know Christ more deeply and make Him known.
