How Christ Ties into Labor Day

Labor Day is a national holiday that honors and recognizes the contributions of American workers and the role they have played in building our great nation. In the late 19th century, trade unions proposed a “Labor Day,” a day set aside to celebrate the contributions of workers. By 1894, thirty states were already celebrating Labor Day. On June 28 of that same year, President Grover Cleveland signed it into law as a federal holiday.

Labor Day is also known as the unofficial end of summer. Traditionally, schools across much of our nation begin their year around Labor Day. It is a day when many of us take time off and remember those whose hard work helps make our lives better. Because of what others have done, we get a day off!

It kind of reminds me of the greatest labor of all time: the work of Jesus on the cross. He lived a perfect life and fulfilled all that was required in the Law of Moses. Yet Christ was rejected and crucified. On the cross, He paid the price for our sins, taking our place.

The Bible says, “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” In other words, beloved, there is nothing we can do to earn or merit God’s favor. We simply believe!

So, as you celebrate Labor Day this year, enjoy the day off with family and friends. But also celebrate the fact that God has freed you from working for your salvation. Christ has given us the “day off,” so to speak. The work has been done.

These Two Felt God Leading Them to Calvary

Jeff and Holli were deeply involved in their church when a friend invited them to visit Calvary Chapel before moving away. After visiting, they both felt God leading them to make Calvary their church home. They came to visit, but not to leave.

They were especially drawn to Pastor Ken’s ability to connect with and minister to people from many different backgrounds and church experiences. At Calvary, they found a community centered on Christ. On what He has done for us and what He continues to do in and through our lives.

What Worship Music Does: "Music has always been a big part of my life. I am amazed at how God can use music to bring life to a hurting heart through a song. Leading worship to me is an honor and privilege that I do not take lightly. I am always amazed at how God can use me to be part of what He is doing and bless others through worship. Truly, one of my favorite times is when the congregation takes over singing, and I can step away from the mic and be in awe. No words can describe how that feels for me."

Favorite Hobbies: These two love adventure! During the summer, you can catch them riding around on their motorcycles, while during the colder months, they enjoy snowmobiling and bringing their grandchildren sledding. They have 3 children and 5 beautiful grandchildren.
