Unplug from the Daily Demands of Life

Americans love to go on vacation. We visit national parks and travel to scenic destinations like the coast of Maine, the Black Hills, the Grand Canyon, and the coast of California. Many also enjoy visiting places like Disney World, Washington, D.C., Boston, Philadelphia, and even the Ark Encounter in Kentucky. Others simply like to escape to a quiet lake retreat or a cabin in the Adirondacks to unplug and recharge.

Jesus often did the same. The demands of ministry were overwhelming, and from time to time, He would withdraw to a solitary place to rest and be refreshed.

Scripture tells us, "And he said to them, 'Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.' For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat."

Rest is important because God has designed rhythms into our lives that provide the renewal we need. The Sabbath is a weekly gift, set aside so our bodies can recover from the demands of work. As we rest physically, we also have the opportunity to be renewed emotionally and spiritually. In our culture, vacations often serve a similar purpose, giving us time to step away from the routines and pressures of everyday life.

As you plan your vacation, be sure to include your daily time with Christ. Don't forget to pack your Bible so you can hear Him speak through His Word. Staying connected to Christ while you're away will help you truly unplug from the daily demands of life and experience the renewal and rest that we all need.
